Social Samvad / Desk : In a significant step towards fairness in school admissions, Delhi Education Minister Shri Ashish Sood today conducted the first draw of lots for admissions under the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) category for the 2025-26 academic session. The event, held at the Old Secretariat, saw parents, children, and media representatives in attendance, reaffirming the government’s commitment to transparency and accountability.

To ensure that the process was completely fair and beyond any doubt, the draw was conducted digitally through a standalone computer, eliminating any chances of manipulation. Multiple television screens were installed at the venue so that parents could witness the process in real-time.

This year, the Delhi Government has also taken a major step towards expanding education accessibility by increasing the EWS income limit from ₹2.5 lakh to ₹5 lakh, allowing more children from underprivileged backgrounds to benefit from quality schooling.

A First for Delhi – Admissions Without Discrimination

For the first time in Delhi’s history, an EWS admission draw has been conducted with such strict transparency measures. Hon’ble Chief Minister Smt. Rekha Gupta and Education Minister Shri Ashish Sood have ensured that every child, regardless of background, gets an equal opportunity for quality education.

Speaking at the event, Shri Ashish Sood said:

“We have introduced multiple safeguards to make sure the process remains fair. This includes a redraw option in case of objections, strict restrictions on mobile phone usage at the venue, and complete video surveillance. The entire process was carried out under the supervision of a special committee from the Directorate of Education, which will also submit a sealed CD of the final results for record-keeping.”

Parents at the event appreciated the transparent system, which eliminates any scope for favoritism or backdoor admissions. Schools that have been allotted students through this draw will be mandated to grant admission without any denial.

Record Participation in EWS Admissions This Year

This year’s draw was conducted for three categories—Nursery, KG (Pre-primary), and Class 1—with a massive number of applications received:

Nursery: 1,299 schools participated, offering 24,933 seats against 1,00,854 applications.

KG (Pre-primary): 622 schools participated, offering 4,682 seats against 40,488 applications.

Class 1: 1,213 schools participated, offering 14,430 seats against 62,597 applications.

At the event, two children were given the honor of initiating the draw. Bhavesh, a resident of Shamnath Marg, son of Gayatri, pressed the draw button for KG and Class 1, while Bhavika, daughter of Anita from Laxmi Nagar, initiated the draw for Nursery.

A Step Towards a Brighter Future

The Hon’ble Chief Minister Smt. Rekha Gupta has played a key role in ensuring that past mistakes in EWS admissions are not repeated. Under her leadership, the government has taken a firm stand against irregularities, making sure that every child gets their rightful place in school.

“For years, EWS admissions were shrouded in controversy and lacked transparency. We understood the concerns of parents and took it upon ourselves to set a new benchmark. With live monitoring, independent oversight, and strict protocols, we have successfully built a system that is fair, transparent, and accountable,” said Shri Sood.

Shri Sood also reaffirmed the Delhi Government’s commitment to ending preferential treatment in school admissions, saying:

“This is not an era where privileged families get special access to schools. Admissions will not be dictated by dynasty or influence—only by a fair, transparent system that gives every child an equal chance.”

He further added that all selected students will receive an SMS notification by this evening, informing them of their admission status.

With this initiative, the Delhi Government is reinforcing its commitment to educational reforms, ensuring that no child is left behind. This is a step towards a Viksit Delhi, where education is not a privilege, but a right for all.
